Its Spring and a young bird’s fancy turns to "ESCAPE"...

We are only two weeks into Spring and already our phones are ringing off the hook with reports of lost birds, and once again Eileen and I despair that very little thought is given to checking open windows and doors before allowing birds out of their cages! Our first question is always "is the bird identichipped or rung" and 90% of the time the answer is no. Neither of us will ever understand the logic of paying £100`s for a parrot, a cage, and buying expensive toys to play with, but not being willing to spend approx £40 for a microchip, which would give lifelong identification. We have a golden rule that all birds sold by us are microchipped and DNA sexed, which is also proof the bird is who it is, if necessary.
Now we have the warmer weather, please do think about your windows and doors being open even only slightly, one of the most common escapes is the bathroom or landing window, it only needs the slightest gap for the bird to fly off your shoulder and through it. No good telling us that the bird is bonded to you and wouldn’t fly off...Flying is a bird thing and they are all directly related to Concorde when they smell fresh air!!! Be honest, if you were quick enough to catch the bird before it got out, every championship football team would pay a fortune to have you in goal.
If you are unlucky enough to loose a bird, try and watch what direction it goes in, and do not panic. Ring either Eileen or me at once, one of us are usually available, and we will give you full instructions on, hopefully, getting your bird back. Putting our phone numbers with your emergency numbers, so you don’t have to search for them is a good idea.
Do not despair, parrots are very resilient when free, and great numbers of them are found safe and sound.
DO PLEASE BOOK YOUR BIRD INTO THE NEAREST AVIAN VET FOR A MICROCHIP PUTTING IN A.S.A.P. you will do both yourself and the parrot the greatest of favours.
Follow the golden rule "Think Bird" and hopefully my next article will be...In Spring a young bird’s fancy turns to LOVE.
And that’s another story entirely!!
